Background of the study :
Artisans play a crucial role in sustaining local economies through the creation of goods and services that reflect traditional craftsmanship. In Gamawa Local Government Area, Bauchi State, vocational training has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the skill acquisition of artisans. This specialized training aims to build on traditional techniques while integrating modern practices to increase productivity, product quality, and market competitiveness. Recent studies (Olaoye, 2023; Danjuma, 2024) have highlighted that vocational training programs tailored for artisans lead to improved technical proficiency and innovation. The curricula for such programs often combine theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experiences that mirror real-world production challenges. Artisans who participate in these programs acquire new skills in areas such as modern design, quality control, and the use of innovative tools and machinery. This amalgamation of traditional skills with contemporary techniques is critical for artisans aiming to expand their market reach and adapt to evolving consumer preferences. Local governments and non-governmental organizations have supported these initiatives by providing resources, technical assistance, and sometimes financial incentives to artisans, thereby fostering a more vibrant and competitive artisan sector (Kabiru, 2025). Moreover, vocational training serves as a platform for artisans to share ideas, learn from industry experts, and access new technologies that can help them preserve their cultural heritage while adapting to modern market demands. The strategic importance of such training is further underscored by the broader economic benefits that arise from a more skilled artisan workforce, including increased employment opportunities and enhanced local economic development. As artisans become more adept at combining traditional craftsmanship with modern practices, they are better positioned to contribute to regional economic growth and cultural preservation. This study will explore how vocational training influences the skill acquisition of artisans in Gamawa, with the aim of identifying best practices and recommending strategies for further enhancing the effectiveness of these programs.
Statement of the problem :
Despite the potential benefits of vocational training for artisans in Gamawa Local Government Area, many artisans continue to face significant challenges in acquiring advanced skills that meet modern market demands. A critical problem is the inadequate adaptation of traditional training methods to contemporary production techniques. Artisans report that while existing vocational programs provide basic technical knowledge, they often lack depth in areas such as innovative design and the application of modern machinery (Salihu, 2023). This deficiency limits their ability to improve product quality and compete in broader markets. Furthermore, many artisans experience difficulties in accessing training facilities that are equipped with up-to-date technology. The shortage of skilled trainers and standardized curricula further exacerbates the problem, leading to inconsistent training outcomes. In addition, limited funding and minimal government support have hampered efforts to expand vocational training initiatives for artisans, resulting in a persistent skills gap. The inadequacies in training ultimately constrain the growth potential of the artisan sector and hinder local economic development. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the factors that affect skill acquisition among artisans in Gamawa, with an emphasis on the efficacy of vocational training programs. The research will identify key challenges in program delivery and suggest practical interventions to improve training quality, ensuring that artisans can effectively harness modern techniques to boost their productivity and economic viability (Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the impact of vocational training on artisans’ skill acquisition.
To identify gaps in the current vocational training programs for artisans.
To recommend strategies for improving training effectiveness and modernization.
Research questions:
How does vocational training affect skill acquisition among artisans?
What are the challenges faced by artisans in accessing effective vocational training?
How can training programs be improved to incorporate modern techniques?
Research Hypotheses:
Vocational training significantly enhances artisans’ skill acquisition.
There is a substantial gap between traditional methods and modern vocational training.
Upgraded training facilities lead to improved artisan productivity.
Significance of the study :
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of vocational training in improving skill acquisition among artisans in Gamawa. The findings will inform policymakers and training institutions on effective strategies to modernize artisan skills, thereby enhancing product quality and market competitiveness. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to sustainable local economic development by fostering a more skilled artisan workforce (Chinonso, 2023).
